George Condo

Expanded Portraits

December 15, 2020 to April 10, 2021

This winter, Galerie Andrea Caratsch is showcasing a group of works by George Condo (b. 1957) consisting of sixteen bronze sculptures titled “Expanded Portraits” from 2002, staged in front of the blown-up silkscreen paintings of the same sculptures. Reflecting the artist’s extensive studies of Greek and Roman statuary, the portraits are structured according to classical ideal proportions. Subject-wise Condo reworks his much beloved protagonists of ancient mythology and his own inner world. We reencounter the “Alcoholic”, “The Old Waternymph”, a disillusioned “Virgin”, a brooding “Perseus” and other familiar figures. Seen as a whole, the enfilade of sculptures offer a unique experience of the artist’s elaborations on the antagonisms between idealized principles and the disenchantment and alienation of human experience.
